Original 1st printing 17&3/8 x 22&1/2" event/concert poster for the 6/27-28/1970 opening shows of the Trans-Continental Pop Festival, held at the CNE Grandstand in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
The poster (the first and second shows on the legendary "Festival Express" train tour across Canada) lists performances by the Band, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin (*and the Full-Tilt Boogie Band), Buddy Guy, Delaney & Bonnie, Mashmakan, Cat (*Mother & the All-Night Newsboys), Traffic (with Steve Winwood), Ten Years After, Charlebois, James & the Good Brothers, Eric Andersen, Mountain, Ian & Sylvia (with the Great Speckled Bird), Tom Rush, Sea Train and Melanie.
Design by Ken Walker and John Lown, image is featured in the Art of Rock on page 376 (plate 4.132).
Medium-thin flat index stock poster is in good to very good (B to B/B+) condition; there are tack holes in the upper left/right corners, along with a series of 5-6 thin diagonal pressure creases in the lower left margin (ranging in size from about 2-4" each), a couple of tiny corner-tip bends, light edge wear, a few stray handling/stress bends hiding within the image area, a touch of toning, a light amount of vertical creasing along the left margin/edge and a thin horizontal/diagonal roll bend traversing the top border of the image (mostly visible on the reverse, it goes through "Continental"), otherwise it is a fine-looking example of this perennial favorite.
As mentioned above, these were the opening shows of the tour- there was quite a bit of unrest outside the venue and a few scuffles with the local law enforcement were reported. Here's a great pro-shot clip of Janis Joplin and Kozmik Blues from the "Festival Express" film;
